These centrifuges are widely used in medical, scientific, and industrial research for tasks such as collecting cells from liquid culture, isolating DNA and RNA, changing cell culture medium, separating blood components, purifying proteins and nucleic acids, and preparing protein samples for analysis.
  • Benchtop centrifuges come in various models, ranging from highly compact to relatively large, to suit different lab needs. For instance, a small centrifuge accommodating 15-ml or 50-ml tubes is ideal for cell culture work, while a model designed for 1.5-ml or 2-ml microcentrifuge tubes with temperature control is better suited for molecular biology labs. 
  • Some mini centrifuges (called tabletop centrifuges) are so small and simple that they are specifically used for basic tasks, such as collecting liquid sticking to the walls of centrifuge tubes after a PCR reaction or briefly centrifuging enzyme vials before use. These compact models are cost-effective and perfect for quick, low-speed applications.
  • Refrigeration models are often preferred for biological samples to prevent degradation during high-speed spins, although they tend to be more expensive. The latest models feature interchangeable rotors, allowing them to handle diverse sample types and volumes, further enhancing their versatility.
  • When selecting a benchtop centrifuge, it is essential to consider the specific requirements of your lab. Factors such as sample volume, speed, temperature control, and rotor compatibility should guide your decision. While additional features like refrigeration and interchangeable rotors increase functionality, they also add to the cost. Therefore, balancing your lab’s needs with budget constraints is crucial. With their compact design, efficiency, and adaptability, benchtop centrifuges remain indispensable tools for a wide range of scientific and medical applications.
