- An organism is any living system capable of carrying out the full set of life processes — growth, metabolism, response to stimuli, reproduction, and homeostasis. It can be as simple as a single cell or as complex as a multicellular being with billions of specialized cells working together.
- Organisms come in an extraordinary range of forms. Unicellular organisms, such as bacteria and many protists, perform all life functions within one cell. Multicellular organisms, including plants, animals, and fungi, divide tasks among specialized cells, tissues, and organs. Despite this diversity, all organisms share core biological features: they are made of cells, they use energy, they maintain internal stability, and they evolve over generations.
- Organisms interact continuously with their environment. They sense changes, respond to stress, acquire nutrients, and reproduce to ensure survival. Their complexity varies widely — from simple microbes that rely on basic metabolic pathways to highly developed animals with nervous systems capable of learning and memory. Yet the underlying principles of life remain consistent across all forms.
- In modern biology, organisms are classified into major groups such as bacteria, archaea, protists, fungi, plants, and animals. Each group has unique characteristics, but all share the fundamental requirement of sustaining life through coordinated biological processes.
