- Cyclin E1 is the first identified member of E-type cyclin. The other known member of E-type cyclin is cyclin E2.
- In humans, it is encoded by CCNE1 gene which localizes at 19q12 region.
- Cyclin E1 contains 410 amino acids with a molecular weight of 47 kDa.
- Several splice variants and isoforms of cyclin E1 have also been reported.
- Both Cyclin E1 and cyclin E2 act as a regulatory unit of CDK2. The cyclin E-CDK2 holoenzymes drive G1/S phase transition by hyperphosphorylating Retinoblastoma family members (pRb, p107 and p130). They are also required for S phase progression.
