Preparation of 1M Acetic Acid Solution from Glacial Acetic Acid

Overview:

A 1M Acetic acid solution can be prepared by diluting the concentrated acetic acid stock solution. Glacial acetic acid, a highly concentrated solution of acetic acid, is available from several commercial suppliers and contains ≈99.7% (w/w) acetic acid. The molarity of this solution is 17.416 M (see the calculation procedure). To prepare the 1000 ml of 1M acetic acid solution, 57.42 ml of glacial acetic acid is mixed with  942.58 ml of water.

REQUIREMENTS

Reagents and solutions
Glacial acetic acid (99.7%)
Deionized / Milli-Q water

Equipment and disposables
Volumetric flask/Measuring cylinder

Composition
1 M Acetic acid solution in water

Objective
Preparation of 1 M stock solution of Acetic acid using glacial acetic acid (Conc: 99.7% or 17.416M)

PREPARATION

Step 1: Calculate the amount of glacial acetic acid required for the preparation of 1000 ml of 1 M acetic acid solution.

Formula : C1 x V1 = C2 x V2

Known values:

C1 = 17.416 (Molarity of glacial acetic acid)
V1 = not known (Required volume of glacial acetic acid)
C2 = 1 M (concentration of final acetic acid solution)
V2 = 1000 ml (volume of final acetic acid solution)

Place all values in the above formula:

17.416 x V1 = 1 x 1000
V1 = 1 x 1000/17.416 = 57.42

So the amount of glacial acetic acid required for the preparation of 1 M Acetic acid solution = 57.42

Volume of water required = 1000 (final volume of the solution) – 57.42 (volume of glacial acetic acid) = 942.58 ml

So we need to mix 57.42 ml glacial acetic acid in 942.58 ml of water to prepare 100 ml of 1M acetic acid solution.

Step 2: Transfer 57.42 ml glacial acetic acid in a volumetric flask/measuring cylinder and make up the final volume to 1000 ml by adding 942.58 ml water.

Step 3: Close the lid tightly and mix by inversion.

Storage:
1M Acetic acid solution can be stored at room temperature for several months.
