Transfection is a very common and powerful method to deliver nucleic acid (DNA/RNA) into tissue culture cells. Usually, the purpose is to manipulate the gene expression of cells to study the function and regulation of a gene(s). It can also be used to overexpress a protein and purify it.
Transfection can be used to
- Overexpression of gene
- Downregulation of gene
- Creating mutations or deletion
- Homologous recombination
- Analysis of promoter activity (reporter assay)
