Bienvenu and coworkers analyzed the expression of p21 in serum-starved MCF7 cells upon IL6 stimulation. Serum-starved MCF7 cells for 2 days were treated with IL6 (20 ng/ml) for 4 h. Total RNA was isolated and the p21 level was analyzed by northern blotting. They did not find any increase in p21 transcripts. However, they found an increase in p21 transcript in response to serum stimulation (Bienvenu et al., 2005).
