Hepatocytes

  • Hepatocytes are the cells found in the liver.
  • They are highly differentiated cells but retain the potential to proliferate.
  • In normal liver, they do not proliferate. However, when the liver is damaged, they proliferate and repair the damage, thus important in liver regeneration capacity.
  • Methods have been developed to isolate hepatocytes from the liver with high purity. These primary hepatocytes are the gold standard for liver-related studies.
