There are no reports of successful isolation of glioma stem cells from WHO grade I gliomas by neurosphere assay. Several groups have reported their unsuccessful attempts to isolate glioma stem cells from WHO grade I gliomas by neurosphere assay. The specific reasons are not known but it was speculated that EGF/FGF2-responsive precursors are not found in WHO grade I gliomas.
