Methylotrophs

  • A diverse group of microorganisms that can utilize single carbon (C1) compounds such as methane, methanol, and methylamine, as a source of carbon and energy, are called Methylotroph.
  • Phylogenetically very diverse group of microorganisms which span across the domains 
  • Include both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and also yeasts
  • Developed metabolic adaptations to utilize C1 compounds as an energy and carbon source
