  • The Okapi (Okapia johnstoni) is a unique forest-dwelling giraffid native to the dense rainforests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This remarkable species, often called the “forest giraffe,” represents one of Africa’s most distinctive and enigmatic large mammals, combining features of several different ungulate families.
  • Adults stand approximately 1.5-1.7 meters (4.9-5.6 feet) at the shoulder and measure 2.0-2.5 meters (6.6-8.2 feet) in total length. They typically weigh between 200-350 kilograms (440-770 pounds). Females are slightly larger than males, an unusual characteristic among hoofed mammals.
  • The species exhibits a striking appearance with a deep reddish-brown to purplish-brown velvety coat, featuring distinctive horizontal white stripes on the legs and rump. These stripes, reminiscent of zebra markings, provide camouflage in the dappled light of their forest habitat. Their face features cream-colored cheeks and a long, prehensile tongue that can reach up to 35 centimeters (14 inches).
  • Only males possess short, skin-covered horns called ossicones, similar to those of giraffes but shorter. These ossicones are typically 15-20 centimeters (6-8 inches) long and are often topped with small tufts of hair. Their head shape is distinctively graceful, with large, mobile ears that help detect predators in dense forest vegetation.
  • Okapis inhabit primary rainforest at elevations between 500-1,500 meters (1,640-4,920 feet), showing a preference for mature forest with dense understory vegetation. They require large tracts of undisturbed forest with diverse vegetation and regular access to water.
  • Their diet consists primarily of leaves, buds, twigs, and fruits from over 100 different plant species. Their long, prehensile tongue allows them to select and strip leaves from branches, while also enabling them to groom their entire body, including their eyes. They regularly consume clay and charcoal from burned areas to obtain minerals and help neutralize plant toxins.
  • Social organization is primarily solitary, with adults maintaining loose home ranges that may overlap. Males and females come together briefly for mating but otherwise lead independent lives. Communication is maintained through scent marking and occasional vocalizations, including whistles, bleats, and coughs.
  • Reproduction involves a gestation period of approximately 440-450 days, after which a single calf is born. Calves remain hidden in one spot for extended periods during their first few months, a strategy that helps protect them from predators. Young begin accompanying their mothers on foraging trips after about two months.
  • The species shows remarkable adaptations to forest life, including large, flexible ears that can move independently to detect sounds, and specialized hooves that provide stability on wet, slippery forest floors. Their eyes are positioned to provide excellent peripheral vision, crucial for detecting predators in dense vegetation.
  • Conservation challenges are significant, with primary threats including habitat loss through deforestation, human encroachment, and political instability in their range. Their restricted distribution makes them particularly vulnerable to local disturbances.
  • Research on wild okapis remains challenging due to their elusive nature and the political instability in their range.
