  • Otocyon megalotis, known as the Bat-eared Fox, is a unique canid species native to African savannas and grasslands. This distinctive fox is immediately recognizable by its extraordinarily large ears, which give it both its common name and its scientific name, meaning “ear-dog big-eared.”
  • Physically, Bat-eared Foxes are medium-sized canids, weighing 3-5.3 kg and standing about 30 cm at the shoulder. Their most striking feature is their massive ears, which can reach 13-15 cm in length. These disproportionately large ears serve multiple functions, including thermoregulation and detecting prey movement underground. Their body length ranges from 55-66 cm, with a bushy tail adding another 30-40 cm.
  • Their coat is grayish-brown to tawny, with distinctive black facial markings, legs, and tail tip. The face features a distinctive dark mask extending from around the eyes to the muzzle, while the throat and underparts are lighter in color. Their fur is thick and soft, providing insulation against both hot days and cold nights in their arid habitat.
  • The species shows remarkable dental adaptations for their insectivorous diet. They possess more teeth than any other canid (46-50 compared to the typical 42), with specialized small, narrow teeth suited for crushing insect exoskeletons. Their jaw structure and musculature are also modified for rapid chewing motions.
  • Their habitat preferences include open grasslands, savannas, and arid to semi-arid regions where termites are abundant. They occur in two distinct populations in Africa: one in East Africa and another in Southern Africa. These populations show slight variations in size and behavior but are considered the same species.

They spend much of their time foraging for termites and other insects, using their large ears to detect the movement of prey underground.   • Their diet consists predominantly of harvester termites, often making up 80-90% of their food intake. They also consume other insects, particularly dung beetles, as well as small amounts of other invertebrates, small vertebrates, and fruits. A single fox can consume up to 1.15 million termites annually.
  • Social organization is centered around monogamous pairs or small family groups. Unlike most canids, male Bat-eared Foxes take a primary role in parental care, spending more time with pups than females. Males guard, groom, and play with pups while females focus on foraging to maintain milk production.
  • Reproduction typically coincides with periods of peak insect abundance. Females give birth to 2-6 pups after a gestation period of 60-70 days. Pups remain in the den for about three weeks and are weaned at 14-15 weeks. Both parents participate in pup rearing, with males taking an unusually active role in parental care.
  • Their activity patterns are variable, being nocturnal in hot regions or seasons and more diurnal in cooler conditions. They often rest during the hottest parts of the day in self-dug dens or abandoned burrows, emerging to forage during cooler hours.
  • Conservation status for the species is currently stable across much of their range, though local populations face various threats. Major challenges include habitat loss due to agricultural expansion, persecution due to perceived competition with livestock, and accidental poisoning from pest control measures.
