  • The Flat-headed Cat (Prionailurus planiceps) is one of the world’s most specialized and least-known wild cats. Endemic to Southeast Asia, primarily inhabiting the lowland wetlands, swamps, and riverine forests of Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei, this small felid is remarkably adapted for a semi-aquatic lifestyle.
  • Physically, the flat-headed cat is distinctive for its unusually streamlined head, from which it derives its name. Adults measure 41-50 centimeters in body length, with a relatively short tail of 13-20 centimeters, and weigh between 1.5-2.5 kilograms. Their most striking feature is their elongated, flattened skull and unusually long, narrow teeth adapted for gripping slippery aquatic prey. Their eyes are unusually large and set forward on their face, providing excellent binocular vision for hunting in low-light conditions.
  • The species possesses remarkable adaptations for aquatic hunting. Their feet are more extensively webbed than those of any other wild cat, with long, narrow toe bones and shortened legs that aid in swimming. Their claws are unusually sharp and cannot be fully retracted, helping them catch and hold slippery prey. Their fur is dense and water-resistant, with a reddish-brown to chestnut color and white streaks on the face.
  • Their hunting behavior is highly specialized for aquatic prey. They are exceptional swimmers and have been observed wading in shallow water, using their partly webbed paws to scoop fish, frogs, and crustaceans from the water. Their long, sharp teeth are particularly effective at gripping slippery prey, while their forward-facing eyes provide excellent depth perception for hunting in and around water.
  • The diet of flat-headed cats consists primarily of fish, frogs, and crustaceans, though they also take small rodents, birds, and insects. Their specialized dentition and hunting adaptations make them perhaps the most aquatic-dependent of all cat species, even more so than the fishing cat. They are primarily nocturnal, with peak activity occurring during the night and early morning hours.
