  • Turtles are reptiles belonging to the order Testudines (also called Chelonia), characterized by a distinctive bony or cartilaginous shell developed from their ribs and vertebrae that acts as a protective shield. Turtles are among the oldest reptile groups, with fossil evidence dating back over 200 million years, making them one of the most ancient lineages still in existence today. The group includes a wide diversity of species adapted to various habitats, and turtles can be broadly categorized into aquatic turtles (freshwater and marine) and terrestrial turtles, such as tortoises.
  • Turtles are ectothermic (cold-blooded), meaning their body temperature depends on the environment, and they often bask in the sun to regulate their body heat. Their most iconic feature—the shell—is divided into two parts: the carapace (top) and the plastron (bottom), which are connected by a bony bridge. Contrary to popular myth, turtles cannot leave their shells; the shell is an integral part of their skeleton, including their spine and ribs. Most species have four legs with webbed or clawed feet, and many aquatic turtles possess webbing or even flippers for swimming.
  • Turtles inhabit a wide range of ecosystems, from oceans and rivers to forests and deserts. Freshwater turtles are common in ponds, lakes, and streams, while marine turtles like the green sea turtle and leatherback spend nearly their entire lives in the ocean. Tortoises, by contrast, are land-dwelling and are adapted to dry, arid environments. Their diet varies widely, from strict herbivory (as in many tortoises) to omnivory or carnivory, depending on the species. Turtles generally have a slow metabolism and long lifespan, with some species living for over 100 years.
  • Reproduction in turtles involves internal fertilization, and all species lay eggs, typically in nests dug into the ground. Temperature during incubation often determines the sex of the hatchlings, a phenomenon known as temperature-dependent sex determination. Hatchlings face high mortality rates due to predation, especially in the case of sea turtles, whose young must reach the ocean shortly after emerging from the sand.
  • Turtles play crucial ecological roles in their environments. They help control insect and aquatic plant populations, aid in seed dispersal, and serve as both predators and prey within food webs. Despite their resilience, many turtle species are now threatened or endangered due to habitat destruction, pollution, illegal trade, climate change, and road mortality. Sea turtles, in particular, face numerous global threats including plastic ingestion, coastal development, and entanglement in fishing gear. Conservation efforts include habitat protection, nesting site management, captive breeding, and international agreements such as CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species).
  • Culturally, turtles hold symbolic significance in many traditions and mythologies, often representing longevity, wisdom, stability, and perseverance. They are featured in folklore from Native American, Hindu, and East Asian traditions, and continue to inspire environmental awareness and conservation action.
