  • The Cape porcupine (Hystrix africaeaustralis) is the largest rodent in southern Africa and one of the largest Old World porcupines. This distinctive nocturnal mammal is widely distributed throughout southern and central Africa, inhabiting diverse environments from sea level to mountainous regions.
  • Adults typically weigh between 10 to 24 kilograms, with some individuals reaching up to 30 kilograms. They measure 63-81 centimeters in body length, with a tail length of 11-20 centimeters. Their most distinctive feature is their impressive array of quills, which can reach lengths of up to 50 centimeters. These quills are modified hairs that are black and white in color, creating a distinctive banded pattern, and are interspersed with shorter, bristly spines and coarse hair.
  • The species exhibits several specialized adaptations. Their quills serve as effective defense mechanisms, being loosely attached and easily detached when predators make contact. Contrary to popular belief, they cannot “shoot” their quills, but the quills readily detach and can become firmly embedded in an attacker’s flesh. The shorter spines on their tail can be rattled as a warning signal when threatened.
  • Cape porcupines are primarily terrestrial and fossorial, using their powerful claws to dig burrows and forage for food. Their burrow systems are extensive, often having multiple entrances and chambers, and may be shared with other porcupines or even other species. These burrows provide protection from predators and extreme weather conditions, and serve as nursery dens for raising young.
  • Their diet is herbivorous and highly varied, including roots, tubers, bulbs, bark, fruits, and agricultural crops. If cornered, they adopt a defensive posture, turning their back toward the threat, raising their quills, and making warning sounds by rattling their hollow tail quills. They may also charge backward toward predators, attempting to embed their quills in the attacker.
  • Conservation challenges facing Cape porcupines include persecution as agricultural pests, habitat modification, and hunting for meat and traditional medicine. While adaptable to various habitats and generally tolerant of human presence, they can face significant pressure in agricultural areas where they are often viewed as pests due to crop damage and their burrowing activities.
  • These porcupines play important ecological roles in their environments. Their feeding activities influence vegetation structure and composition, while their burrowing creates habitat for other species.
